£12k of funding awarded to local projects as part of Lewisham Borough of Culture 2022

Phoenix Community Housing has awarded £12,500 of funding to local community projects to support Lewisham Borough of Culture 2022.

Introduced by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan in 2017, the London Borough of Culture award sees London’s 32 boroughs bid for more than £1m of funding to stage a programme of cultural events and initiatives. As the winning borough for 2022, Lewisham will put on a year’s programme of activities to celebrate the borough’s diversity as well as a call to action on the climate emergency.

We wanted to make sure that our small corner of Lewisham gets in on the action, so the Phoenix Community Chest has awarded £12,500 to projects that benefit Bellingham, Downham, Whitefoot and Grove Park and fit in to the Borough of Culture agenda.

The winning projects are...

Animated Phoenix

This project will run 3-day animation workshops for local primary and secondary school children where they’ll learn how to, and make, a stop-frame animation.

Hazelhurst Art Club

This project will create artwork from the Hazelhurst Court residents' personal stories, archives, images and objects which will be digitalised and printed onto ceramic plates, cups, teapots to use as a tea set that will stay with the residents.

Phoenix Mural

Taking place during Summer Fun 2022, local families will come together to create colourful art murals in the community.

Watergate Wonder Tour

This project gives complex needs students at Watergate School the opportunity to work with 5 professional musicians to create a Happiness Concert that will go on a 'Wonder Tour' across the borough.

Weather Playground

The project will design, fabricate and install temporary structures inspired by weather stations that attach to the existing playground pieces in Bellingham Green Playground. The pieces will allow children to discover science and the natural world in a playful way.

Wuntanara African Drumming

Free after-school African Drumming Workshops for children at Elfrida and Athelney Primary Schools.

Thank you to all the projects who applied and congratulations to the winners. Look out for more information on when the projects will be starting and how you can take part.
